“A Dawn of Hope Spread’s Over the Earth”

I think one of the most touching parts of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring occurs in the mines of Moria when a weary Frodo after being reminded of his own hobbinity (I assume this is the hobbit equivalent of humanity) confesses his feelings regarding the quest to the wizard Gandalf:

“I wish it need not have happened in my time,” said Frodo.

“So do I,” said Gandalf, “and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”

 

I know that Easter is supposed to be a season of joy, but I’ll be honest with you, aside form the continued awesomeness that is Pope Francis, I have had a difficult time finding anything to be joyful about lately. [More ...]
